This Project proposed by National center of Earth Science, Akkulam Thiruvananthapuram, envisages the use of forest land for the construction of “Geo environmental observatory”, which will serve as a primary data source of several hydrological, geological, agronomical and climate change studies, in the high altitude region of Periyar river basin, at Sankhumalai, Munnar. Since the proposed project requires only 0.04 Ha for the installation of various instruments and the project does not involve major constructions and the proposed project is causing minimum damage to the forest land and the small area proposed may not affect movement of wild animals.

The site is a ridge with grassland and nearby Anamudy peak and about 2100m above MSL it is ideal for an observatory due to minimum disturbance and connectivity for observation and installation. The project will cause only minimum disturbance and the area required is negligible and is only a research setup with no other disturbance from development envisaged, the proposal is recommended.
